Mehrine Shaikh, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Fairfax Cataract and Retina in Fairfax, Virginia. With more than 15 years of experience, she specializes in cataract surgery and the medical management of vitreoretinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and other complex retinal disorders.

Dr. Shaikh earned her medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. She further advanced her training through a clinical research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute in Boston, where she focused on complex retinal and ocular inflammatory diseases. She then completed her residency in ophthalmology at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., serving as Chief Resident during her final year.

To pursue advanced subspecialty training, Dr. Shaikh completed a fellowship in Medical Retina at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, one of the nation's premier ophthalmic training programs. She currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Dedicated to preserving vision worldwide, Dr. Shaikh has participated in multiple international medical mission trips, performing sight-saving cataract surgeries for underserved communities. She has also authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has participated in clinical research throughout her career. To remain at the forefront of her field, she regularly attends national and international scientific conferences and stays current with the latest advances in ophthalmology.

Dr. Shaikh is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the American Medical Association (AMA).
