Mehrine Shaikh, MD

Mehrine Shaikh, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Fairfax Cataract and Retina in Fairfax, Virginia. With more than 15 years of experience, she specializes in cataract surgery and treating vitreo-retinal diseases — including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other complex retinal disorders.

Dr. Shaikh completed her medical training at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. She also completed a clinical research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute in Boston and a residency in ophthalmology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she was a chief resident.

Dr. Shaikh attended a fellowship at the prestigious Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, which is ranked among the top programs in the nation for ophthalmic training. She has participated in several international medical mission trips, where she performed sight-saving cataract surgeries on underserved populations.

Dr. Shaikh has published her research in well-known peer-reviewed scientific journals. She continuously attends scientific conferences to stay abreast of the latest research in the rapidly evolving ophthalmology field. 

She’s a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and American Medical Association (AMA).

Using the latest advances in procedures and technology, Dr. Shaikh has expertise in retinal laser procedures, retina injections, laser cataract surgeries, and much more. She was voted Top Doctor for four consecutive years.

Dr. Shaikh welcomes new and existing patients to Fairfax Cataract and Retina and enjoys improving their vision and eye health.
